TRUMP WILL SIGN EXECUTIVE ORDER ON THE TOPIC

Newsroom/El Comercio de Colorado

President Trump announced that he is preparing a plan to limit the options for asylum applications at the border with Mexico. They goal is to allow to apply those who approach the border legally.

“Under this plan, the illegal aliens will no longer get a free pass into the country by lodging meritless claims in seeking asylum,” Trump said asylum applications would have to be made at ports of entry only under the proposal.

Trump assured he is finishing a plan that will finish the abuse of the system of asylum, without providing details. According to the president, irregular immigrants who enter unauthorized request asylum to the border agents with the goal of not being removed and to stay in the country while their cases are reviewed.

Smaller amount

Trump expressed his intention that undocumented individuals remain detained while their application is processed, which he insisted is not currently happening. His words are in contrast with the fact that irregular immigrants often are detained indefinitely until their cases are resolved. The new plan to change asylum applications at the border is not the first one. This administration has drastically reduced the number of refugees.

In October, the federal government announced that they would reduce the number of refugees from 5 thousand to 30 thousand for the 2019 fiscal year. This is the lowest number of admissions since 1980. This past June, Jeff Sessions, U.S. Attorney General, announced that “in general”, victims of domestic violence or gangs would not be eligible for asylum anymore. These restrictions have not been applied yet.

Words of and activist

Omar Jadwat, From the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), strongly criticized the president. “If he is trying to prohibit the people from requesting asylum in any way in the areas between the ports of entry, that plan is illegal. What is clear at this time, and considering how vague his words were, is that he is trying to fire up his base as a final push for the midterm elections,” explained the activist.
