Jason Crow, Representative for Congressional District 6 in Colorado, demanded an explanation regarding the health conditions of the detainees at the ICE detention center in Aurora. Crow indicated his “serious concerns” for 1,500 immigrants hosted at this detention center for immigrants, presumably undocumented, that is administered by GEO Group. The Congressman for the district that includes the city of Aurora hopes that Kirstjen Nielsen, Secretary of Homeland Security, will be able to provide details regarding the conditions inside the detention center.

Crow inquired about the chickenpox outbreak and any other illnesses. Crow wants to know how many people were quarantined. According to Crow, the petition relates to the fact that the center just added 432 beds at a building annex to the main building. The capacity of this detention center is now 1,532 people. “The expansion of this building comes right after two chickenpox outbreaks, separated by few months, forcing many detainees to remain in long quarantines,” he explained.

Only one doctor

He also said, “I understand this center has only one doctor for all the detainees, even after the increase in the population,” he added. The congressman voiced his frustration for not being allowed to tour the facility, particularly the annex building. A representative of GEO Group informed him that he needed to schedule a tour in advance before being allowed in the building. Geo Group received almost 2 million dollars per year from the Federal Government to operate this detention center.
