The headquarters of the SEIU Local 105, a union that gathers janitors and health care workers, was the first place chosen to discuss the raising of Denver’s minimum wage. Commenting on the new bill, Michael Hancock explains, “our goal is for every one of our residents to be able to access the success and opportunities our city has experienced over the past eight years, so we must take the opportunity to open the door for them to access it.”

The proposal is to increase the minimum wage for the city of Denver to $ 13.80 per hour on January 1, 2020, and to $ 15.87 per hour on January 1, 2021, with annual increases based on the consumer price index (CPI) every subsequent year. According to data collected by the city, the minimum wage increase would end up being applied to more than 100,000 people once it increases to $ 15.87 in 2021, approximately 27 percent of the city’s workforce. The increase would apply to adults and emancipated minors.

In favor and dissenters

According to the councilwoman Robin Kniech, the increases would be a boon to people of color and women working in Denver as well, who traditionally hold more of the low- and minimum-wage jobs in the city and county. Kniech said that 30 percent of women working in Denver would see raises by 2021; that nearly 51 percent of Hispanic workers would see raises by that year.

Some workers affiliated with the SEIU criticized the proposal. However, most of the workers at the SEUI’s town hall showed their approval to a increase of the minimum wage. Kniech, however, understands the controversy this bill can cause in regards to the businesses. Leaders of the bussiness community in Denver has expressed that increases in wage reduces jobs, and harm small businesses.

Implementation

City leaders will continue working on the proposal in October. They will organize four additional town hall meetings. In November, the city council would discuss the project, with the inputs of town halls.
