Hundreds of youth from Hispanic and other minorities were attacked with guns in Denver and surrounding areas between 2012 and 2017, according to study by the Denver Public Health. According to the study, in the years mentioned above, about 700 youth were shot. Of that group, 45 per cent were Hispanics, 29 per cent were African Americans, and 23 per cent were white.

Gun violence in Denver affects about 6.3 people per 100,000 residents, the same as the national average. But this number increases to 67 per 100,000 for local residents between 19 and 24 years of age. Regarding fatal victims, 74 youth were shot and killed during the analyzed period, plus another 311 that were seeing in emergency rooms after being shot.

Denver Public Health anticipates that every year, as an average, there will be 13 youth that will be shot in the city, 69 will be wounded, and 616 will be somewhat affected, in situations of assault, and mild injuries. These attacks take place mostly around gang activity. “And it doesn’t include indirect effects to the families or the communities,” clarifies the report.

Guns as a cause of death

The numbers above mean that “firearms are the main cause of death amongst youth in Denver,” especially males, who are seven times more likely to be shot than women in the same age group. “Because African Americans and Latinos are more likely to live in poor neighborhoods, they are also more likely to be the victims of violence,” explains the report.

The document concludes that gun violence is a “critical but preventable public health issue,” and there is an “opportunity to change history”. Among some solutions, they mention the coordination of local existing projects, or the adaptation of those programs that have been successfully implemented in other cities. Among those, there is Oakland Unite, California, that reduced their homicide rate to the lowest level in 20 years.
