WITH THE THEME “WE CRY FREEDOM”

Newsroom/El Comercio de Colorado

Thousands of people marched in Denver to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. The ‘Marade’ started at City Park, where his statue stands, and ended a few miles later at the Civic Center Park, located between the State Capitol and the City of Denver building. Throughout the journey, those who attended repeated the slogan for 2019 “We cry freedom,” and showed a wealth of signs with famous phrases from Dr. King, including “I have a dream”.

The march had a moment of tension at the beginin when some people issued insults against blacks, as it had happened in 2018. “It is sad t osee that there are still racist people in our state, even today, who know nothing about African American culture, and attack our leaders. We hope this will change,” said a spokesperson of the African American Initiative of Colorado Democrats (AAICD). Later, many speakers highighted the message of peace, unity an non-violence of Dr. King.

Food and clothing

Since 1985, when this tradition started, at this event food and clothing are collected. These goods are then distributed amongst low income individuals, the disabled, and victims of domestic violence. This year, the organizers added a new group of beneficiaries: federal employees who were affected by the partial shutdown. This was the first time in the history of the march that the help made it to the hands of federal government employees.
