UNDER INVESTIGATION PORTER ADVENTIST HOSPITAL IN DENVER

Newsroom/El Comercio de Colorado

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) is investigating a possible contamination of patients that went under surgery at the Porter Adventist Hospital in Denver. Patients who had orthopedic or spinal surgeries might have been exposed to Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C or VIH, at that hospital during the past 18 months. Those who had surgeries between February 20th, 2016 and April 5th, 2018 are at risk.

The hospital sent letters to an undisclosed number of patients to warn them of the possible infection. Meanwhile, Centura Health, institution in charge of the hospital, announced that all surgeries have been suspended at the hospital while CDPHE investigations are in course. They are also now examining the quality of the water used to clean the surgery equipment.

According to Centura Health, some surgeries have just been postponed, while in other cases, alternatives are being sought for affected patients. The problem was uncovered on February 21st and, after the initial procedures, it was determined that the “surgical equipment was not cleaned properly.” The contamination happened presumably due to the equipment’s lack of sterilization.

No panic

Dr. Larry Wolk, executive director of CDPHE, explained that the new inspection of the hospital was also trying to determine if there were more people at risk of being infected. So far, no patients have been reported infected, but according to CDPHE, investigations continue.” If any case is reported, those patients will receive “the necessary information and resources.” “The risk of damage caused by this incident is still unknown, but we believe is low,” said Wolk.
