A group of 237 representatives started a petition to force a debate on DACA. This group of 190 democrats and 50 republicans is pressuring the current congress to work on regularizing the immigration status of 800 thousand young adults who are currently protected by DACA. This initiative targets Paul Ryan, Speaker of the House.

Promoters of the idea are Republican representatives Jeff Denham (California), Will Hurd (Texas) and Mike Coffman (Colorado). They joined forces with Democratic representatives Michele Lujan Grisham (New Mexico) and Pete Aguilar (California) to devise a mechanism to revive the DACA debate at the House of Representatives. The legislative procedure the found is called “Queen of the Hill.”

There are four bills

If Ryan accepts the petition, the House would vote over four bills related to DACA. According to the procedure, the bill that gets the most votes will move forward to the Senate. The bills are: One sponsored by Republican Bod Goodlatte, that has passed Judiciary Committee; the Dream Act sponsored by Democrat Lucille Roybal-Allard, and a proposal by Hurd and Aguilar.

The House would also vote on a bill chosen by Ryan. Denham hopes that the debate would take place before the end of July of this year. This Representative didn’t rule out the use of an alternative procedure in case Ryan doesn’t accept the petition. The other procedure would be a discharge petition, that would force the Speaker of the House to call a debate on DACA.
