HISPANIC ACCESS SENDS MESSAGE TO CORY GARDNER, SCOTT TIPTON Y MIKE COFFMAN

Newsroom/El Comercio de Colorado

In December 2017, president Trump announced the biggest blow in American history against national parks under federal protection. The administration reduced by 2 million acres the size of national parks Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante, lands located in Utah. Ryan Zinke, U.S Secretary of Interior informed that these areas that were removed protection will be open for gas exploration, and oil and coal mining, as well as forestry.

“With the rollback of national monuments in Utah, it’s clear that those wanting to drill, mine or sell off our public lands to the highest bidder – are the only voices being heard,” said Maite Arce, president of Hispanic Access Foundation. “The actions of the Trump Administration run counter to concerns of the public at large. During the Department of Interior (DOI)’s public commenting period at least 2.8 million comments were submitted, and 99 percent of those comments were in support of not closing or reducing the size of national monuments throughout the country,” she argues.

Colorado pushes back

The president of Hispanic Access voiced her concerns after the DOI announced their plans to reduce the size of at least another eight national parks, in other areas of the country. Areas protected in Colorado might even be at risk, despite the opposition Colorado residents show. The 2017 Colorado College conservation poll showed that 83 percent of Coloradans back keeping national monuments in place, while only 10 percent support revoking them.

“We need Sen. Gardner, Rep. Tipton, and Rep. Coffman to recognize that most of their constituents don’t support the Administration’s efforts to rollback protections or sell off public lands,” explained Arce. And she continued, “in ignoring their constituents and failing to speak out against the Trump Administration’s efforts, Sen. Gardner and Rep. Tipton are jeopardizing the cultural and outdoor heritage these national monuments represent.”
