Michael Hancock, is seeking reelection as Mayor of Denver

Newsroom/El Comercio de Colorado

Michael Hancock grew up in Denver and has dedicated his career to serve the community. He was elected councilman in 2003 and eight years later he became the mayor. Before his work in politics, Hancock worked at the National Civic League and the Denver Housing Authority to empower communities and improve the quality of life of low-income families. He later became the youngest president of the Urban League of Metro Denver, that serves African Americans and other residents in Denver. Hancock is also a deacon at the New Hope Baptist Church.

Hancock is seeking reelection as the Mayor of Denver. He is basing his bid on his achievements of the past 8 years. Hancock began his administration of the city at a time when there was almost a two-digit unemployment rate. “The city had not hired any new police officers or firefighters for years, and the municipal services had decreased during the time of the recession. We have worked to create thousands of well-paid jobs for residents of Denver; has increased the opportunities for small and minority businesses. Denver is now a desirable city”, said Hancock.

Challenges for the next administration

Hancock indicated that the focus of his new administration will be to build affordable homes and to address the homelessness issues the city faces. “We are investing 60 million dollars every year, in affordable housing. We will continue doing it for the next 5 years “, said Hancock. So far, the city has been focusing on promoting affordable houses for low income individuals. “We are now in a transition and in the process of developing attainable workforce housing. These are multi-family home complexes that will prevent Denver working families from leaving the city”, he said.

“I am opposed to Initiative 300. We must remain innovative and progressive. In Denver, we allocate $50 million dollars every year for the homeless. We have opened three shelters and give shelter to about 325 people. Also, we provide health services and temporary jobs for them,” he said. He added the new goals he has: “We want the homeless with partners and with pets to be able to use the shelters. These people will be able to protect their belongings and will continue to receive mental health services and treatment against addictions.”

Under fire

For this third election, Hancock is facing three contenders that have issue strong critics to his work as a mayor. “We listen carefully to all criticism. And that has allowed to have deep discussions on topics of great interest to the city”, he stated. Hancock says he is focused on ensuring that “Denver offers opportunities for all its residents. I want to be sure that this is an economy more equal and inclusive for all people. That is where we are going.”
